30 degrees and sweaty
Yesterday was Christmas Day, not that it was obvious here, apart from the Christmas songs playing in the hostal, nothing much changed for the day. The supermarket was open, but closed at 6 rather than the usual 9, and everyone was in there filling up their SUVs with cool boxes full of beer, Smirnoff Ice and agua and heading for the beach. We managed to phone home by buying a phone card in the end because the VOIP phone from the hostal wouldn't work to the UK. We had prawns, cooked in garlic, wine and tomatoes with avocado salad for lunch, with a very cold bottle of Pinot Grigio, the first since leaving the UK in June. That was pretty much it for the day, Dave was supposed to build my new wheel and to fix his gears (they have stiffened up just like mine did a few months ago) but never got round to it. The evening was spent with our new Italian friends (I knew I should have written down their names) who live in London and were leaving at stupid oclock this morning, so by 10pm we were all going to bed.
We (I) lost a day on the way here, I thought we arrived on the 21st and it was the 22nd, consequently we paid for 5 days when really we only wanted to stay for 4. Oh well, we get to chill for an extra day before we head off 'up north' towards Nicaragua. I got chatting to a Canadian woman last week who was telling me about a Canadian cyclist who was relieved of all her posessions just outside Managua, at gunpoint. The police, tried to be sympathetic by saying that she was lucky she got away with her life, that was nice of them.
