This is the mist extensive and important classical archeology site in Greco-Roman archeology. Not only did St. Paul write a letter to them, but he preached there against local pagan gods and was almost lynched by the townsfolk.
Req
The site is huge, and like most of the really cool places in Turkey, swarms of tourists are disgorged by busses. Knowing this, we arrived before they opened the gates and had the place to ourselves for over an hour.
Two streets converge at 90 degrees in the center of it. The streets on ancient times were lined with fountains, statues and public services
At about the middle of town are "the terrace,". a a block of houses that were owned by moslt ich folk in Greek and Roma times, but in byzantine era served the hoi paloi. Preserved in these ruins were a number of frescoes and mosaics. I am posting a number of these, along with photos of the slightly reconstructed library.
