In 1979 my Mum (Betty) and Dad (Ronald) were on their way through Dumfries & Galloway and made a detour, for obvious reasons, so that they could get a photograph of Dad standing beside Loch Ronald. There was even a handy sign for him to pose next to.

32 years later and today I made the same detour of over 20 miles down a single track road that looked like it hadn't been resurfaced since 1939 never mind 1979 to find the site of the photograph Mum took that day.

I drove up and down the only road that passes anywhere near Loch Ronald but couldn’t find the right combination of wall/tree/sign. Got the wall and the tree but no sign….

Then I spotted it leaning against a fence. They thought they could fool me by repainting it and putting it on a new post but I’m smarter than that. It’s the same sign alright. It had been broken in half some time before 1979 and stuck back together so the MA and RK are out of line – and they still are. Do you see? They are. Looks like it’s been broken and fixed again since 1979 but it’s the same chunk of metal – yes indeed.

God I’m good.

I came this close to walking off with the thing as a family heirloom because it wasn’t stuck into the ground but then posting details of the crime on this blog would have to win some kind of Dumb Crime of the 21st Century award wouldn’t it.

Just a note to the next generation of the family: Laura, Jimmy, Charlotte, Rachel, Jasper and Imogen – I expect one of you to go and check that the sign is still there in 2043. My driving licence will have expired so you'll have to take me in your hovercar or whatever you young people are using by then.

Good work Rick! I'm picturing the hounds sniffing around with the scent of 'battered old sign' in their snouts.

I've got until about 2069 to do my bit. See you next week!

Cheers Jimmy,

Yeah, I wouldn't have found it without 3 scent hounds. Better make sure we have a few Bassets handy in 30 years time. See you next week buddy, Rick
