The exterior of Roslin?/Rosslyn?/Roslyn? Chapel is dull but the interior is like an intricately decorated wedding cake that has been turned inside out. Of course most wedding cakes aren't usually decorated with images of fallen angels and the Dance of Death but maybe you get the idea. It's like they didn't know when to stop with the carving but in this case more is not less, more is...well, more. Most of the time you just don't know where to look.

The decoration at Rosslyn was been linked with the idea of hidden meanings long before the Da Vinci Code. In the Lady Chapel there are a load of little carved stone cubes that are covered in unexplained dots and dashes. No one knows for sure what they are supposed to tell us. The best theory to date is that the symbols correspond to musical notes and a couple of musicians have managed to produce a piece of music apparently breaking this particular code.

The St Clair family built the place and legend has it that the night before a Lord of Rosslyn dies the chapel will appear to be in flames only to be found completely untouched the following morning. Well there have been quite a few Lord Rosslyns and the place is still here and currently ungoing a 13 milion quid restoration which has included creating a complete digital model of the interior using a laser imager.

Now tell me they haven't fed this model into a very, very big computer to see what makes Rosslyn tick...

Hello Margaret, yeah I realised how close I was when I saw the sign for Auchendinny. I sent a note with my mobile number via the CF website in case you were around as I didn't like to turn up unannounced. I'm sure our paths will cross again at some point.
