Now it's hard to visit New Zealand without noticing the flax plant.  Large green spikes (we saw some over 8 feet tall) with further flower stalks towering above. Love used by the Maori for it's tough fibre useful in many applications. One of the most common was basket weaving.

Hilary has done lots of this in the past and offered to show me how to do a basket on our last morning together.

Now I'm not sure this is a handicraft that will follow in the wake of wool. It's still quite mysterious to me. I don't really understand how to create different shaped bases and how to lock off the final
edge. But Hilary was a master, even tracking back a mistake. It looked like a giant tangle to me and was hard to make sense of what was going on, but managed to make a swirly flower to finish everything off.

Now is the task of trying to get it through customs in one piece!
