With our last minute decision to head south, we didn't really plan where we wanted to stay. Forgetting that it was almost New Year's Eve we arrived in Koh Lanta without a place to stay. Well, time may have been getting away from us, but everyone else seemed to remember and wanted to be on an island for a party.

After cruising up and down the beach asking at every place we saw (and being refused) we were getting a bit desperate. Brian wanted to hump up into the jungle to sleep, but I had seen a small sign for a home stay who had dorms. One bed left...I asked if a husband and wife could share a bed. She was hesitant, but then after thinking decided that she DID have a room we could stay in! Oh joy! She re-arranged some sleeping arrangements in personal bedrooms and we stayed in the little girl's room with bunk beds. It was very sweet of them and we were very thankful to have a nice place to sleep without being too expensive (I think they were the only place on the island that didn't double their prices for the holiday).

Searching for a SCUBA centre to dive with we started inquiring with other bungalows at a quieter end of the beach and managed to find one, even talking the guy (girl?) down from 1200 to 600. Phew!

New Year's Even in our new digs was wonderful! We bought some bevvies and candles and just sat out in the hammock enjoying the warmth of the evening.  Amazingly, we have a bungalow just off the beach surrounded by trees and gardens which play host to 1000's of frogs singing their songs.  The rise and fall of this all evening was music to my ears, and trying to identify individual frog voices was a bit of a game.

Every so often we would walk down to the beach. Again we were at a quieter end (vs. bars called “Flint's Stoned” at the previous beach). There was just one bar with some coloured lights , chilled music, and a bonfire. With a perfect view up the shoreline, we could see the scores of parties and their fireworks going off over the water.

Every once in awhile an explosive would shoot off from behind us and burst overhead in a shimmering light. There were also these full boxes of fireworks which would shoot off hundreds of varieties within a minute or two. You would never know where they would show up, so you had to hope you saw someone setting it up to be prepared. Another wonder of Thailand. Certainly no designated safety area!

Standing on the beach with the tide licking our toes, we watched people lighting large paper lanterns to set free over the water. Seeing people's New Year's hopes and dreams floating off beyond the horizon was a very tranquil feeling and incredibly beautiful to behold.
