Shuffled into our 1st class tourist only train car, with men carrying machine guns patrolling our safety, we prepared for a very long ride to Aswan.

This was our 2nd night traveling without a bed.  First was a bus from Dahab, and 2nd was the train from Cairo.  The idea of night transportation sounds good on so many levels.  Firstly, you can sleep and wake up in your new destination, you don't need to pay for accomodation...But it doesn't really work out that way.  You hardly sleep at all, you're not refreshed to site see, and you certainly do pay!  Nights of fitful sleep awakening from time to time with a stiff neck and various limbs that have gone numb.  We managed to catch a few winks between demands to see our tickets.  Insane.  I mean really, who was getting on or off the train to warrant this?  There were no stops!  Time crawled by and eventually the dingy brown windows began to lighten and dusty grey silhouettes of palm trees started to fly past.  We were on the Nile!

Soon a shimmering orange globe hung suspended just over the horizon.  The start of a new day, and only 4 more hours (if we’re lucky) left on the train.

Arrival in Aswan was quite uneventful.  We found a hotel, ate a big bowl of Koshary, wandered around the souq, and did some very bad bargaining.  Found out where our cruise boat departs from so we can make it there early in the morning.  Watched the falloukas flit back and forth across the Nile like those crazy little white butterflies that never seem to know which way they’re going as the totes tried to get business from the roof of our building.  Watched a spectacular sun set and moon rise combined over the Nile river.  I’m ready to step back in time and travel into an ancient Egypt.
