Woke up all excited to go to Palmyra and explore the ancient ruins today.  I only really have 3 things that I want to see in Syria and this is one of them.

But Brian didn’t sleep last night and feels even worse today, so we’re not going anywhere.

That mean’s another day in this crappy little town where I’m afraid to go outside.  It’s also doubly frustrating because we’ve finally got good terrain and weather for cycling and we’re cooped up sick instead.

Went to mail a parcel back to Canada and had a complete run around.  Being shuffled from wicket to wicket I was finally sent downstairs into a little room.  They wanted all sorts of crazy information like phone numbers and address in Syria.  When I finally got through all the hassles the woman tried to rip me off.  As if I could grow to despise this town anymore.

On the good side, there is a very interesting souq filled with artisans making their craft - even tiny forges burning away while the men sit cross-legged in front of them.

And for some change in monotony and a little laugh we went to the cinema to see a film in Arabic.  Entered to find that we were the only ones in the theater.  The lights dimmed and curtian opened immediately for us.  We even had a guy come right to our seats to serve us snacks and drinks.  Even though we had no idea what was going on and the camera shots were really bad, it was worth a laugh at the end of a miserable day.  Especially when they copied scenes from the Titanic and remixed Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’  with a middle-eastern dance beat and sung it in Arabic.
