Cycled into the ancient theater of Epidavros - heralded to be the best preserved of the ancient world, and I believe it could be true.

Immense in size it can seat 14 000 people, and it’s still used today.  Built into the surrounding hillside, it’s extremely stable and it shows.  Barely any decay even though it was made in the 3rd century BC.  Incredible to see how perfect the dimensions are and how perfect the acoustics are.  Standing at the center focal point of the theater, just the sound of your feet scuffing against the dirt rushes back against you from the empty rock seats amplified several times over.  No problems hearing the actors during a play.  If anything, you have to be careful what you do say.

Mostly all original rock, only a few upper edges where the structure extended beyond the natural lay of the land, has there been repairs made.  Looking at some of the chipped, yet worn rock seats I was amazed at how they’ve stood the test of time and wondered who may have occupied them over the last 2200 years.

The size and scale of this thing were truly amazing to behold.  Even with my widest angle on my camera, I couldn’t get it all in.  It’s amazing how the ancient Greeks came up with the idea of an amphitheater and their designs are still used today:  amphitheaters, coliseums, stadiums.  The most effective way to pack people in needed little improvement it seems.

Had a nice picnic lunch perched at the very topmost seats and enjoyed eavesdropping on everyone’s conversations while they walked through the theater.
