Flag of France  , Corsica,
Sunday, November 1, 2009

Beautiful morning watching the sun rise over the water and lighting up the island of Corsica (Corse in French).  An island I didn’t even know about until just a little while ago, and now I’m about to arrive (unintentional detour though it was).

Deciding that I needed to stay positive and make the best of things I greeted the day with two main items on my agenda.  1) find out when the next boat to Italy is and book passage.  2)  try to find a map of Italy so we don’t make a similar mistake!

There was one sailing to Italy with only one ferry company out of 4.  Livorno.  Where is that?  Off to find a map so I can see where it is we’re going today and make sure it’s in the appropriate country.  Sailing the Mediterranean is nice and all, but…

Managed to find an overview map of at a little tabac.  Won’t be good for cycle routes, but it at least gives us some bearing to navigate by, and do some overall planning.

Then to help pass the hours, there was a large flea market of sorts in the main town square.  Strangely enough, junk is just junk all over the world!  That left a bit of time to sit in the sun and soak in some heat.  Funny to sit in shorts and sleeveless tops while everyone else around is wearing winter jackets and scarves!  But it gave me a bit of time to time over France, and the unplanned extra time I had.

Here’s a few funny cultural differences I observed while here.

-  street side vending machines for condoms in every little town
-  stop signs in English rather than “Arret”
-  almost 7 Euro for a bottle of hair mousse, but only 2 Euros for a bottle of wine
-  ink on money that runs in the washing machine
-  co-ed toilets and showers
-  shops closing between 12:30 and 2:30
-  no shame in ‘evacuating’ in public
-  ‘Bell Ringer’ is a legitimate profession
-  Beer served at McDonald's
-  writing cheques for minuscule amounts at the grocery store

Some funny little things, but I really enjoyed my time here.  I found the people very warm and easy to get along with despite the negative reputation that’s out there.  I’m glad that I was able to cycle through so many different areas and see so much.  I even was able to expand my vocabulare a little bit.  But beyond all else I have to make note of the food - again!  Maybe that will be my focus for the next few countries.  But I believe there’s a reason why both Brian and I stopped loosing weight when cycling in France…
