Our first official day of 'work', and we got to stain window frames!  Not quite the farm work I'd envisioned, but OK none the less.  Strange working side by side with Brian as we haven't done that much.  We tend to each work on different tasks.  I was expecting frustrated bursts as is the norm, but we communicated well and didn't have it out - even once!  Maybe this trip is teaching us a few things...

This is the home of about a 12 chickens, 6 ducks, 4 rabbits, 2 hare, 6 quail, 2 guinea fowl, and 2 pigs.  We are greatly looking forward to learning how to care for these different animals.  I would like to someday keep chickens, ducks, rabbit, pigs too so this will be great experience.  I would also like to have some goats and maybe sheep, but we'll start with the smaller ones!

One big job that will be worked on while we're here is making a secure chicken house.  They lost about 15 chicken a week earlier to a fox, so this is a main priority.  There is an old stone building on the property that needs some reinforcing and a roof.  Right now the chickens are being locked up in a coop each night, but can roam 'free range' during the day.  Unfortunately this means that eggs can be laid anywhere, so each day is like an Easter Egg hunt!

We have a great set up here with our own bedroom and bathroom upstairs in a separate wing of the house so it's very private.  In exchange for 3-4 hours of work each day we get all of our meals.  Since we get along quite well we'll also have some outings to look forward to with the family as well.

It's a beautiful piece of property in the country at almost the highest point in Normandy (the highest point is just across the road in the woods) and overlooks the town of Vire.  Beside the house and barn there is the beginnings of an orchard and a pond stocked with trout.  Lots of roads to walk and bike, and perhaps even an outing out with the hosts.  Should be an interesting time!
