What happens when you take a beautiful little island with crystal blue bays surrounded by lucious green cliffs and throw in a bunch of tourists? - The island turns into a circus of souvenir shops, restaurants and beach bars that blare out trance music all night.
This is Ko Phi Phi. Tourism has taken over brutally and taken the natural magic of the island away.

It was not what we expected or hoped for on this trip so we will move on after only staying a couple of nights. It is not the best place for budget travellers and after coming from Bangkok where we were spoiled with great cheap food and accommodation, Phi Phi is even a little shock to the system. It is rather a place for a party holiday with friends.

Luckily our half-day boat trip today made up for our first disappointment with this island. We took a boat to Maya Bay where they filmed The Beach and finally found what we had been looking for: paradise. Also packed with tourist but as a national park at least untouched by entertainment establishments. The weather was also in our favour. While the rainy season really had held all it's promises so far there was not one drop falling from the sky.

Tomorrow we will take the ferry back to Krabi for one night before we head off to the islands further north. We had already spent a couple of nights in Krabi before we came to Phi Phi and enjoyed the sleepiness of the town and all the different nibbles at the night market. It was a great place to get some rest and collect some strength, especially in the Guest house we found that offered us a huge double bed with snuggly duvet and aircon (so that it actually made sense to use the big duvet). Sometimes it's good to take advantage of what little luxuries you can get on a trip like this :)
