We really enjoyed our stay in Kampot. It is a very small town along the Mekong river with many aging colonial French buildings. After we had left Ganesha resort we found a nice Guesthouse more central so we could enjoy the sunset in the bars along the river.
During the day we had rented a motorbike - this time only one- and one day made our way to the countryside, to the secret lake and caves and another day to the neighbouring town Kep. Kep is located at the sea and has a beach that was packed with locals because it was the weekend of the King's birthday. Otherwise there is not much to do but it is nice to just have a look around and get some noodles from the market.
Our favorite attraction was the cave. When we arrived at what just looked like huge fields we were greated by a group of local kids, fighting to be our "tourguide" or the guard of our moped. I don't know how they figured it out but we ended up with an 8-year old boy and girl taking us the short walk to the mountain and into the cave. They were really cute and spoke English very well. During the "tour" they showed us elephants, pigs, a ghost and cows - stone formations inside the cave. It was a lot of fun and I don't think we would have recognized any stone animals if we were just by ourselves.
Apart from all the friendly people in Cambodia we love the food and the fact that you can get it for cheap everywhere. It is great fun ordering local food from the little food carts along the roads and very often we are pleasantly surprised by the great Khmer flavours - crispy baguette with pickled veg and slice pate, coconut curry with noodles, something that looks like an omlette with bean sprout and minced meat wrapped in salad leaves or smelly ice cream in baguette for desert. My favourite is rice noodle soup for breakfast. I just hope I can somehow figure out how to make it for myself in Europe. While in the beginning of our travels we were very caucious with food and didn't have any ice nor uncooked vegetables, all this good behaviour has gone to pot and we literally eat everything we come across and fancy. So far, we have luckily not had any problems.
Now we are back in Phnom Phen for a couple of days because our flight is from here to Bangkok.
