The Great Wall

Flag of China  ,
Saturday, February 25, 2012

If you make it all the way over to China, then the Great Wall is a must see!! So that is what we did today. Getting up at 7 a.m. we took a two hour coach to Mutianyu - a part of the wall that is not completely restored and less touristy than the part in Badaling.
The entry was included in the tour we booked, so was breakfast and lunch. On sight we had to pay again though to take a cable car up the mountain and a tuboggen down.
The wall looks just as amazing as on postcards and documentaries... ancient culture surrounded by a beautiful and idyllic mountain range. With the sun shining our way along the bricks we even managed to get a sunburn on the nose, and finally we were not freezing anyomore when wearing five layers of clothing.
For a good three hours we climbed the uneven stairs before we took the tuboggen all the way back down. That was a bit of a disappointment though because after about 500 metres a girl on the slope was going so slowly that she held up everyone behind her. At a snail's pace our queue of about ten people ended up at the bottom... it was quite funny though (for me, all the boys complained about not being able to finish their races down :) )

A Chinese saying states: "You are not a hero unless you climb on the Great Wall". So that has established then what I can put officially as my title from now on. Hero(ine) Jenna... who needs a Dr. if they can be a hero, hey?

We are going to spend two more days in Beijing, just doing some more cultural exploring of the area. Monday night we are going to take a train to Xian - a 12 hour night train in the "hard sleeper" category. Not too sure what that entails but I am guessing a bed without a matress. I am excited to find out more...
