we are in rivas. i didnīt bother to put that on the "where we are" because thereīs not much here and iīm sure the beach weīre heading to tonight will be a more exciting "map pin"

we did make it up the volcan masaya and had a wonderful evening camping and playing guitar while stealthily hiding our weenie roast from the park wardens. the crater was pretty smoky (thus obscuring the lava) and we didnīt see the thousands of nesting parrots but from their cheerful hootings we knew they were en-masse somewhere close by.
next we made our way to ometepe island where we stayed in a beachside hotel that rented kayaks. we were very active and are now paying the price with sore little leggies. the wooden poles on which we now support ourselves are in such a state because we slogged up the (hardest) path up volcan something for 8 hours through 3 different kinds of jungle.  upon reaching the summit of the cloud forest shrouded extinct volcano our guide proudly announced that we had reached an altitude of 1345 metres (we started at sea level) and that there was a lovely crater lake exactly ... there....
somewhere
in the clouds.

we also saw a 40 metre (NOT 120 metre) waterfall, had a lovely kayack trip up a river lined with trees that smelled like piņa colada and mangos, watched the startled fleeings of some magnificent storks and herons, took photos of freed monkeys relaxing on their own private island, and were completely ignored by several cows. the day after the volcano hike we made a 10 minute walk to a nearby restaurant in 40 minutes flat but were able to enjoy a meal and the company of some roaming quebecois who we shared the afternoon with before crashing out in preparation for todayīs mission of exodus.

bit of bad news today, simonīs newly tested hiking boots did not accompany us back from the island - is this an opportunity to see if skateboard shoes can ascend the next volcano? what will become of his birkensttocks? how come we havnīt had lunch yet?

letīs go and do the latter thing
