Had the choice of going two different routes today to Sandpoint from Spokane, one that was 85m and on quieter roads and one that was 75m but on a much busier two lane highway. Decided to take the shorter route - which was a little hairy at times given the road shoulders weren't overly generous and some of the lorries weren't overly generous either in the space they gave me.

Though the wind was in my face all day, it was not too strong so I managed 13mph which is a bit of a disappointment from the 16-18mph I have been averaging over last few days and made the ride a  little longer than hoped. I set off at 6.15am and arrived just after 1pm. However, it was a beautiful ride and I knew that I was having a rest day on Saturday which is both needed and a thoroughly exciting prospect.

The ride was one of the hardest, not because of the physicality, but because mentally I hit a bit of a wall today. Though it is the end of the first week and I have done c450m I still have the prospect of another 9 weeks of the same non stop riding and about 3800 miles to go and that prospect haunted me most of the day. It is a lonely experience and grueling but I hope there will be some sense of achievement at the end, which is part of the reason I am out here.

Arrived in Sandpoint which is reached by a 2-3m bridge over the majestic Lake Pend Oreille lake. It is the 4th deepest in the US and has 111m of coastline and on Sunday I get to cycle around most of it! It is a ski and summer resort and hence is quaint and beautiful and my room at the Best Western must be one of the most impressive of any of that chain - and having stayed in many I can attest that this is really a stunning location.

After the visit to the coin operated laundrette, an experience I havn't had to go through since my last trip 5yrs ago, I had a delicious dinner of steak and crab cakes and the single glass of red wine was enough to send me to bed at 9pm!

Hey my lovely brother, I've just been catching up on all your blogs! I'm so proud of you. It's such an amazing thing you are doing even though it is slightly surreal. Please be safe and look after yourself. I have had a lovely weekend so far...Tammy and Delia are here at the moment. They arrived on Friday afternoon. After a quick hour or so on the beach, we had afternoon tea with champagne, cucumber sandwiches and cupcakes that I had one of my chefs make especially for Tammy for her birthday. Each one was themed, representing all of her favorite things from her mad cat to her favorite book and favorite place etc. they looked amazing- take a look at my Facebook page for photos! Anyway after tea and a good catch up we spent hours getting ready as us girls can and then went into Monaco to the Buddha Bar, I can't remember if I've been there with you but it's such a cool venue, great food, great music and great cocktails anyway we had a great night finished off by a stroppy French taxi driver throwing us out of his cab cos we were laughing so much we were making too much noise! Yesterday was spent relaxing by the pool - the first day it opened which I christened by swimming 30 lengths. I am going to try and do loads more swimming to try and shift all the weight I have out on since the first round of IVF which despite trying I can't seem to shift. Anyway we had a lovely picnic style lunch on our terrace, like the ones we used to have in the villas in valbonne - lots of cheese, ham, salami and pates! Diner last night at a local French bistro and a relatively early night. Nice lie in this morning reading our log (putting me to shame for being so lazy). Not sure what the plan is today. We were going to hire a boat but the weather is not so good today so we'll have to do something else instead. Anyway thought you might like to read about some one else's life just to keep you entertained for a little while. I am thinking of you lots and really am very proud of my big brother. I love you lots and lots. Gros bisous x x x x x x

Well done you! I am not sure if I should be horrified or very proud that I have such a crazy, courageous Godson! I am enjoying all your blogs while I sit at my computer with my feet up nursing a few nasty varicose ulcers! Something that I could well do without at this moment in my life when I would really like to be keeping myself overactive with no time to sit and think! Keep going & the best of luck for the rest of the marathon! XXX
