Today dawned wet and cold.  We suffered through light rain and high temperatures in the low 40s. (It is in the 70s where we are heade in Coldfoot, Alaska, 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle).  Just 100 miles to the west in Dickinson, ND, they had 2 inches of SNOW... We are headed that way tomorrow.  This is supposed to be a summer trip.  (This was their first June snowfall since 1951.)

In spite of the weather, we visited Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site.  This area was the home of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Awatixa tribes of Native Americans and a major trading center.  All lived in earth lodges.  We enjoyed a ranger guided tour of a recreated earth lodge.

We then crossed back over the Missouri River to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center that includes a rebuilt version of Fort Mandan where the Discovery Corps spent their first winter 1804  to 1805.  In spite of the rain there was lots of activity there with a period rendezvous going on.

Lewis & Clark enjoyed a very friendly relationship with the Mandans, and were warmly welcomed back on their return trip.
