San Miguel de Allende

We are here and settled into San Miguel de Allende, but as always
getting there is half the fun, so let me tell you about today's
travels. We started off with another very tasty exquisite desayuna at
a charming restaurant in the town square in Guanajuato. Full bellies
and we were ready to load up Hazel and head off to San Miguel. On
the way, we took a tour (got a bit lost) in the tunnels of Guanajuato
and scheduled a stop in Dolores Hidalgo.

In Dolores Hidalgo they do a lot of pottery, and my Mom has done a lot
of pottery, what a coincidence. There were lots of shops and stands
selling their talavera pottery, but we went right for a factory tour,
thanks Cathie. This area is one of the few places talavera is made in
Mexico. It was interesting to see how they grind the clay into a
powder. Because it's so hot and dry here, (sorry but I couldn't help
mentioning that), the clay starts off rock hard, not like soft clay
as we imagine it. Then the clay is put into molds. After setting in
the mold, it is removed, smoothed and then allowed to dry in the hot
sun. (sorry I did it again.) After drying in the hot sun, the pottery
is bisqued, then dipped in a white glaze. Next it's passed over to
the talent, where it is painted, and colored before getting it's
second firing. It takes about 3 days to go from clay to market... I
think mom considered filling out a job app.

Back on the road towards San Miguel, wouldn't you know it, we came across
a large talavera outlet. This is where Cathie and I bought some
dishes last year, we stopped and made a few purchases. Cathie and Mom
were like kids in a candy store. I stayed outside with Kona as we did
not want to experience the bull /china shop situation.

Thirty minutes later we were in San Miguel. We found Mom and Dads charming
little apartment, and they are delighted with it. Us three bears are
camping just two blocks away, so that sure worked out well. After
settling in, Mom and Dad came and joined us for a delicious dinner.
Thankyou Cathie.

Tomorrow we explore San Miguel, and I know that will be fun, oh and yes the
weather looks good.

Cheers
from San Miguel de Allende.

Hey guys, I'm really enjoying the blog, I'm so glad that your parents are happy with their apartment Ross, and it's great you guys found a place to park Hazel so close by! I love when you write about mom snuggled in reading or soaking her feet, it's an image I know well and I like to think of her happy and cozy.

This looks like a charming little town - what a lovely place to call home for the next month and a half. Snow in Vancouver - ran into some ice today paddling :) Enjoy the sunshine!
