What I did
Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park
Elk...right in the grass alongside the road!

The northern part of CA 101 -- two - sometimes four lanes and almost no traffic.  It's easy riding this morning on our way to Jedediah Smith Redwood Park to mingle with the tall redwoods.

SHE'S READY!   It's quite cool this morning and guess who came prepared.  My travel companion this morning is wearing all three coats she packed...and yes Dale you have it right...that is why I have my stuff strapped to the trunk outside the car. She's under the fur trimmed hood somewhere...  We were on our way to Crescent City when I noticed a roadside stand of redwood chainsaw art and had to pull over to check it out.  Rod, the artist, was a builder before he retired...so we hit it off right away...he thought our trip with the old car was something he would love to do if he only had time.  He said he often is not even finished with a sculpture when someone asks to buy it.  He said if he did not love what he was doing ...he would retire from retirement.  We talked for quite some time...until a customer pulled up and asked to purchase one of his works.  I thanked him for his time and we were on our way.

We were not far from the wood carvers stop and right on the passenger side of the car in the grass there were some bedded elk.  They did not seem concerned at all that we stopped to take pictures of them.  The calf was a bit curious and came up close.

The coast was overcast this morning.   We had an awsome riverview near the Redwood Park.

We were able to drive a 6 mile narrow dirt road through the Redwood Park. We put the top down to better take it all in.

Click on the extra photos below for the rest of the elk story. Read the caption on the upper right side of the screen that opens.

62,132 on the odometer means we have traveled 5,487 miles.  Over these miles, we have changed the engine once, the oil twice, greased the chassis 4 times, tightened the front wheel bearings, have had zero flats but ran out of gas once, met lots of great people and Jean and I are having the time of our lives.
