What day is it?  Whatever day it is we are up at 4:00 a.m. and on the road at 4:45 to try to beat the heat.  We drove in the dark and the car is running well and it's so much more comfortable.  As the sun rises we are slowly climbing altitude and it's getting chillier--I'm even wearing my gloves!!

We crossed the Continental Divide--elevation, 7,278--Whoopi!!

We stopped at Gallup, New Mexico to see the Giant Muffler-Man Cowboy that stands proudly at John's Used Cars and The Lexington Hotel which was built in 1931.

We also saw the 1937 El Rancho Hotel where we visited with a big group of bikers from all over the world that had stayed at the hotel and were packing up and heading to the Grand Canyon as they were also doing Route 66.  Comment added by Dave later in the trip:  Little did we know...We would meet up with them a couple times down the road and share some stories:

The weather was still quite cool so we decided to drive thru the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest National Park and we're so glad we did!!  It was incredibly beautiful!!

We drove into Holbrook, Arizona and ate lunch at Joe and Aggie's Cafe and then we're going to see the new Superman movie and check into our motel for an early night!!
