The minibus picked us up at 7am and Coronado our friendly caretaker at La Paz let us out. It dropped us off at a cafe that had a courtyard full of beautiful orchids. We had a yummy desayuno (breakfast) and then we were on our way. It was about 2.5 hours away and very foggy. We stopped once for the mountain view but it was too misty to see. On our way our charming guide taught us the right way to say things and a few words in Q'eqchi' which we promptly forgot except for ĻutīzĻ which means Ļitīs okĻ.
Once we arrived at Semuc Champey which is one of the national parks we received our bag lunches and went for a hike. The limestone pools are beautiful. It was a little bit overcast and not really hot but we went in the pools anyway and it was tons of fun.
After a few hours we went to the Lanquin Caves where our guide kept asking if we saw monsters in the shapes of the cave and would sometimes point out various creatures like monkeys, elephants or alligators. We stopped at one place in the cave that is still a sacred altar for Mayans. The stalactites and stalagmites were huge and there was a couple of places where they were joined. An hour in the cave was enough for me but Morrison wished there was more. Our tour was headed back for Coban but we got to stay!
Our treehouse room was one of 4 in a swaying shack that had screens on the windows but lots of spaces between the boards. It was fun and that night we decided to stay another so we could spend time at the Cahabon River (which runs through Semuc Champey) and Morrison could visit some more caves the next day.
