We woke up in the morning, checked out, and then went to climb a little mountain near the city. It was pretty cool, nice views, I took pictures. Anyways, it started to rain (again), so we drove on to this place called the hot beaches. They were like three hours away, and it's through tedious winding roads, and after how little sleep I had, I was just ready to have a nice dinner and go to bed. But We got to the hot beaches, which is this beach with a thermal bed underneath it, so the ground water gets heated and rises up to the beach and oozes out in certain places. Then people dig holes and make their own little spa tubs in the sand with hot water. It was still raining, so we didn’t, but there were plenty of people there who were enjoying their hot tubs. It was actually really neat.
Anyways, today was mostly rain and driving… We arrived at a nice hostel, and I went and bought the fixins for some good old-fashioned hamburgers, fries, and beer. Despite the rain, I was determined to be happy tonight. And it worked. The burgers were delicious, the fries were perfect, the beer is good. And the company was nice too. There were a bunch of Germans (as always), and some other kids as well, and we all chatted for a while. One of the kids was going to go camping, but wanted to wait for the weather to get better. We talked about places to camp, how to get around, all that. He was eager to hear about my camping journey. Then they started watching a movie, and I wrote up these entries. I will get lots of sleep tonight, and even though it will probably rain tomorrow, I will be much much happier.
on a side note, I have to say, this german girl is an interesting one to drive with. She's so insistent on not having any plans, that it's impossible to do anything. She wants to be all "go with the flow", but I don't think she realizes that if you don't at least pick some things to do, you'll never see anything good. You need and end point, or a destination, and then what happens along the way is what you leave to chance. A little frustrating. I'll be dropping her off in Auckland tomorrow, so I'll be on my own again, which I'm looking forward to.
