Welcome to Costa Rica! The most incredible country with the friendliest people I have ever met! As my luck would have it, I found a true gem in the heart of Escazu, a suburb of San Jose. Big Mikes Guest House is in a private residential neighborhood in Escazu, in the Los Anonos Urbanization. The Pin on the map is dead on where I am. You can see the river, it's in the back, I look at it, while I drink my fresh Costa Rican coffee! At the time I am writing this, I am the only guest here! So it's not crowded, and I doubt Mike would allow any seedy characters access to it either. At the very end of the street it's the most unassuming oasis you can imagine. Mike is actually from California and is an Executive Chef and runs a business here called http://culinaryadventurescostarica.com .This sprawling compound offers you everything you could want from a base station for your Costa Rican adventures. There are no less than 8 bedrooms, extra clean, some with large private bathrooms. There is free wireless internet, computers available if you need one, telephone, and 110 electric service. Most rooms have Cable TV and I'm watch US football as I write this. The main parlor is like a large living room in a huge house and has a library stocked with over 100 travel and language books covering all of Central America. The main dining area has over 6 tables for you to dine or plot your next jaunt. Since this is also part of his culinary school, you have complete access and use of ot only the whole house, but the most amazing professional gourmet kitchen you've ever seen. Absolutely every possible impliment is here for your use. I was given space in one of the large commercial refrigerators, and cupboard space for groceries. There is an excellent food market with everything from you could want only an 8 minute walk away. Within the same distance, there are several excellent restaurants. Getting around San Jose is cheap, so for a few bucks, you can get anywhere in a cab 24 hours a day. In the back of the house is a Japanese looking treehouse with more bedrooms, or a place to relax, read or what have you. The back courtyard is loaded with plants and flower, no less than 7 tables, and an awesome view of the Orinoca River cascading 200 feet below this place. The ravine out back which drops into the river gives you the impression you are in the middle of the Rainforest.  Onsite, there are a few other Characters as well, Lucy the White Faced Monkey has her play area, Mike has 2 Parrots and 2 dogs that will like you after a day or so. There are also 2 other libraries in the house with hundred of fiction books and other readings. The entire set up is very cool, and the host Mike, is one of the nicest people I ever met. A great host, and excellent source of information who speaks fluent Spanish. You can even have a private language tutor come and give you a "spanish boot camp" language lesson. The price to stay here is $125 to $150 a week! They have bigger rooms for slightly more, but chances are staying here at the low end will accomplish all your prerequisites. Remember, you get to use the entire house as if it was yours. This isn't a hotel, so you don't have to worry about some of the restrictions, such as over night guests. This is your home away from home, and it's the best deal and best spot I have found here in San Jose so far. Mike has a Maid named Sandra who is available to do your laundry, sew, iron or press some clothes. She speaks no English, but is there to keep the place clean during the week. This really is your home away from home, and I can't think of anything that this place doesn't have. The only thing missing is you! Advance reservations are not required, Mike will take your word that you are coming. To Contact "Big Mike" Michael Forbes, here at Big Mikes Guest House the telephone number here is 011-506-289-6087.
