 April 01 Maun

Today we arrived in the town of Maun where we plan to stay for 3 nights.  Found a nice Rondavel Chalet.  Looking forward to a break after 5 nights of camping in the wild.

You would have thought Karyn would be all over me with hugs and kisses on our arrival.  After safely navigating and driving 4 days of bush trails and keeping Harley from getting stuck, getting Harley restarted after stalling in water, keeping Harley from rolling over in a deep hole, standing guard while Karyn peed in the jungle and finding the correct trail after getting lost.  But not Karyn; rather than focusing on how I kept her safe and alive the last 4 days in the jungle, she focused on why I took her there in the first place.  Talk about the glass being half empty rather that half full. Hah, Hah

We have now travelled 4 different countries in Southern Africa.  I must say that to this point, in many ways, Africa is the most difficult area I have travelled.  Getting any information or advice or help from the general population, or even from the supervising staff in a local business is difficult and in many cases impossible.  I expect this is a cultural thing, and I tell myself a big reason we travel is to experience different cultures.  It is frustrating, but if every thing worked the same as in Canada, why would I even bother to visit different countries.

After our "short" experience in Kenya we began using the terminology "TIA" THIS IS AFRICA" and resigned ourselves to the fact that we were not going to be able to change the culture so had to go with it.
Your adventures are awesome and someday, even Karyn will laugh as she relates the stories.

And every year just b4 you leave, we always ask you the same question - Why on ' God's Green Earth ' do you find it necessary to torture yourself to this degree. The only conclusion we can arrive at is this: It is your self imposed penance for past sins ! As always, TRAVEL SAFE and wash, wash again, and then scrub. Please don't bring any bugs back to VOTS.

What a trip. We are back in the sunroom watching over your place. Bridge with the girls tonight. We miss you. Have fun and keep safe.

Cassandra and Ethan are wondering if any chance you have room in back of Harley to bring home a baby elephant - They promise Hurley wont attack it. If not how about an ostrich Egg?
