After spending a few days in Panama, it’s even better to be in another foreign country! Just two weeks ago, I would never really been past Illinois or Ohio. Now, I am discovering the world in a whole new light. We are here in Helsinki, Finland, where it’s not quite so warm, but it is still nice. It is really different. The weather is about the same - about 45 degrees in November. We’re here to learn about the Helsinki Accords.

The Helsinki Accords were also known as the Helsinki Final Act and was an effort to reduce tension between the Soviet Union and Western blocs by confirming their acceptance of Europe’s post-World War II status. The Accords were not binding and they did not have a treaty status. Gerald Ford was the representative of the United States and signed for us. He also reaffirmed that the United States’ non-recognition policy of the Baltic states that had been forced upon the Soviet Union had not changed because of this treaty.

This treaty is important in that it provided a sense of peace for those in Europe in even the United States. Without this treaty, another war could have broken out. Things today would not have been the same in that more violence would be around. I, as an American citizen, really appreciate the act that Gerald Ford committed.

I advise Obama or Romney to sign treaties to keep peace, but only if necessary. When there is an opportunity to add, bind, or commit peace, we should jump to that. I honestly believe that the more allies that we have, the better. We will stand a better chance in case of war or other tragedy. We will never know when things can go wrong and peace could save that from going wrong.

Now, Tukea, Cody and I are off to tour downtown. We hope to find some form of the Accords - whether it is a copy or an original, we do not mind. We are very excited and hope you are as well!
