Here in Newport News, Virginia is one of many important buildings for the Department of Energy. Located here is the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, also known as Jefferson Lab or even the JLab. Until 1996, it was known as the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, which is still a name commonly used for the main accelerator.

The Jefferson Lab was found shortly after the Department of Energy and employs over 675 people. The Department of Energy was created on August 4, 1977, a few years after the 1973 Oil Crisis. The Department was signed in by Jimmy Carter in an initiative to help the energy crisis that came up several times throughout his career. The Department was signed in by the Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977.  We earlier visited New Orleans, Louisiana to learn about the Energy Policy and Conservation Act, which was a related legislation.

The creation of the Department of Energy was important in Jimmy Carter’s presidency - it helped temporarily calm down the crisis. Many times throughout his presidency, this crisis popped up. Every year, and every new event could be turned into something to do with energy for a while - which would lead to the Crisis of Confidence speech.

To Obama and Romney, this situation isn’t quite so relevant. Although there isn’t much of an energy crisis, we are running out of fossil fuels quickly! The Department of Energy helps create solutions to these only issues. We only advise that they keep the Department of Energy - to get rid of it would be silly!

Well, it’s nearly time for us to go visit the HQ! Well, not really the HQ, but the Jefferson Lab, the Accelerator Facility. We plan to take a tour and learn even more throughout this trip! WIsh us luck!
