A great feeling of achievement, joy, and excitement overwhelmed me today when I stepped into the Oval Office. With my colleagues behind me, I couldn’t believe that I was in such a wonderful place full of years upon years of history. Dozens of speeches had been delivered here, and every president of the United States ever had stood in this room! Jimmy Carter himself delivered the Crisis of Confidence speech in this office.

Carter had been spending some time in Japan when he received a call from Patrick Caddell, Carter’s pollster. Caddell was calling to inform Carter of the energy crisis that had spun out of control. While Carter had been in Japan, gas prices had skyrocketed, gas was in shortage, and the economy was in a decline. American citizens were so angry that Carter’s approval rate dropped incredibly to 25% - which was lower than even Nixon after the Watergate Scandal. Carter came home and to Camp David for a week to decide what was to be done.

It was there, in the very room I stood in earlier today, that Jimmy Carter delivered one of the most important speeches of his life. He addressed the energy crisis and the lack of spirit after. Soon after, his approval rating increased. And even shortly after that, Americans became angry and questioned Carter. They wanted something to be done, not just to be said.

Now, Obama or Romney, here’s my advice. Firstly, when you make a mistake, you should definitely confess what you have done and take responsibility for it. If there is a crisis taking place, don’t avoid it! This is what Carter did, and it got him into plenty of trouble. If you just make a plan for a crisis as soon as possible, it may not blow up in your face later. For the most part, a crisis can’t exist if you’re a great president!
