I takes a very picturesque day and a half's journey (only partially appreciated due to one too many caipirinha on the night before), cutting through the dunes of the Lençóis Maranhenses and the labyrinthine Parnaíba delta (sometimes literally by machete) and switching vehicules five times (alternating between buses and 4x4 trucks), to arrive to Jericoacoara, a small village famous for its beaches and towering sand dunes, and listed as a top hippie backpacker destination (although nowadays the majority of the hippies seem to have made way for the bigger tourism with loungy pousadas and restaurants). With most of the town made up of these atmospheric establishments, I praise myself fortunate to be in Jericoacoara in the period after carnival when tourist numbers are at their lowest.
During a buggy ride through the beautiful landscape of sand dunes - and on our way to the pristine and aptly named Lago do Paraíso - my camera got soaked and destroyed during a short (but fierce) downpour. So almost within the same week I'm forced to downgrade for a second time - now to the 3 megapixel camera on my cell phone. A real shame, because this part of Brazil is one of the most colourful in all of South America.
To make it a perfect day in paradise, my spare cell phone died for the same reason ánd I received message from the Brazilian postal services that they lost my package with half a year's worth of souvenirs.
