Show trip route
Day 332 - We get up early, have our breakfast and then head off to the Cowboy show, next we board the train for our trip to Grand Canyon. Once there, we are met by the driver of our bus trip, but first we are taken to the hotel (that we will be spending the night at), and have our lunch before we go on our trip of the "rim". This is the first visit to this spectacular park for the kids (Nick and I were there over 40 years ago), and I am wondering if the long trip to get here will be worth it for them.
That night we spend the night up at the GC and have until 3:00 p.m. the next day before we board the train for our ride back to Williams. The kids and Nick and I attend a Ranger Program on the California Condor, along one of the rim viewing sites, and wouldn't you know it, a Condor actually passes quickly by and he's off. But at least a few of us got a great glimpse! How's that for being in the right place at the right time!
As we were walking back from the Village to our Hotel, we had to pass by a herd of both mule deer and elk that were blocking our path. We waited for awhile, and finally felt safe enough to pass by them without incident. The kids are used to Elk being that they live in the Foothills south of Denver, but these are big animals! I was a bit nervous.
The next day we went to the visitor center where the kids got their badges for Jr. Rangers and we took a bus in the other direction to see more views of the canyon, before we had to get back to the train
But what we didn't expect was to be on the train coming back and to be accosted by bank robbers!!! They came up beside the train on horseback with masks and guns and racing beside the train, until the engineer felt the need to stop. The robbers boarded the train and demanded money from all of us on the train. Oh my!!! Of course, this is all for the youngsters aboard the train, and the personal assistants in each car make sure to convey to all the little ones, that there is nothing to fear and they have us practice screaming and pretending to be afraid. The kids just love it when they come on board. Most of the people have attended the cowboy show and have seen all of these fellas previously. It was lots of fun and the boys enjoyed it so much. I had bought chocolate gold coins for them to give to the "robbers"...not sure they were all that excited with chocolate instead of real money which everyone seemed to be giving them? Who knew? The funny thing was that I gave the boys their coins and Lars ate his within the first 2 minutes!!! Too funny. He wasn't about to share his chocolate!!!
Grand Canyon facts: Don Lopez de Cardenas, a captain in Coronado's expedition in 1540 was the first non-Native American to discover the canyon; The GC was made a National Monument in 1908 and a NP in 1919
Enjoy the scenery!!
