Day 108 - August 15th - Today we left Anchorage and headed the 234 miles to Denali.  We are staying just outside of the park and tomorrow we get up at 4:30 a.m. to get down to the bus by 5:45!  The weather for tomorrow is supposed to be sunny, so we'll see.  I am hoping for lots of animal viewing and of course, Mt. McKinley.

The photos from today are all about the drive.  We pass through Wassila where Sarah Palin was Mayor.  It was a stop for the railroad back in 1916.  Billed as a "pioneer town", but it was actually like any small town.  The population here is 3,666 and it is the largest town on this road from Anchorage all the way to Fairbanks.

We also pass through the town of Willow, which was very tiny.  This was also a stop for the railroad back in 1987 and gold was discovered here.  Now you find about 6 Fireworks stores and very little else.  Population here is 1930.

Along with views of Mt. McKinley along this route you would also be able to see several glaciers.  Ruth, Buckskin and Eldridge can be seen on the southern slope of the Alaska Range...IF you have clear weather, which we did not!  Other mountains along the range are Mt. Hunter (14,573)
Mt. Huntington (12,240) and Mt. Barrille (7,650) and Mt. dickey at (9,845).  Not to be seen by us today!
