Since it had been raining in Seward for the past several days, the ice was a little soft and consequently these two huge tents that they have for the two 18 year old kids that live up there had slid off their foundations and were tilting, so they use snowmobiles to pull them to another spot to level them. Must be fun at night wouldn't you thing??? Ugh.
The boy, Evan, was a sled dogger and was I think third in the junior division of one of the qualifying races. He raises, trains and sells these dogs to other mushers. Each dog costs $2,000 and he has sold 27! He told me he doesn't get all the money, but still. He is now in training for the big race. To qualify they have to run one 300 mile and 2 200 mile races...wow.
The girl, Lauren, is a student at Amherst College in Massachusetts and has one more year to go and isn't sure yet if this is the path she wants to take or not.
The sled dogs are all Alaskan Malamutes - and that's a nice way of saying - Mutt! They are all bred with breeds that like to run!! Greyhound, husky, pincher, etc.
Very cool as you will see...enjoy
