Flag of United States  , South Dakota
Monday, May 27, 2013

Well, today is Memorial Day - A day of Rememberance.  We saw lots of flags along the way and the bridge over the Missouri River was all decked out.

As we started out and left the "Little Prairie" behind, we were in a bit of fog and as we headed West and then South, it became a beautiful day.  The best amount of sunshine and nice temperatures I think we have had in awhile.  We were leaving all the plowed (yet not planted) fields of this part of South Dakota when we saw a Coyote crossing one of those fields towards the road.
Pretty Cool - oh, would you like to see a picture of him? Yea.....

I've decided that Nick doesn't know the saying, "It not the destination, but the journey"...he has it backwards and he is ALL about the destination.  But, you soon begin to realize that you just can't see it all!  I think if you spent one solid month in a State, you still wouldn't see all that there is to see.

Our route took us through the State Capital of South Dakota - Pierre - which I learned is pronounced "Peer". F  rom there we cross the Missouri River and the landscape changes from farming to Grassland...we are in the Ft. Pierre National Grasslands...our elevation is 2,045 - almost nosebleed height coming from Hilton Head (won't it be fun when we get to 8,000 or more)!!

Road kill for today was 2 deer.  I've got enough meat in my freezer to last me a year - but we will have to eat fast or invite a boat load of people since I have to be ready for the Salmon in Alaska to take over the freezer and maybe some Halibut if Nick catches some on his trip out of Seward.

As we were driving along, a quail took off from one side of the road and barely missed the driver side window.  Now that would have been goooooooood eating!!

We arrive at our destination and we are about the third person in the entire place.  Two others come and spend one night - we will be here tomorrow as well.  We take a walk after dinner as it is still nice and the sun doesn't set until 9:00 p.m.

I am learning quickly that I shouldn't assess a campground until I spend the night.  So given that theory have I got a story for you....check in tomorrow, same time, same station for that story...

The west is definitely a different "animal" than Hilton Head.  Stay well....
