Today we woke up to rain and in the beginning not much wind, but that didn't hold.  The wind came back fast and furious.  Since it was raining we decided to head into the little town and explore and do a little food shopping as well.

While we were there we went to the Ingalls family plot at the local cemetery.  Then back to the homestead to see all that there is here.  They have interpreters at each place so you get the history.  We went to the dugout; the small one room tiny shack; the homestead house; the sod roofed animal barn and the larger barn.  There is also an auto fix it shop and a school.  In order to see the school, they take you in a covered wagon ride over and back.  We then walked to a pretty church that is on the property, but not really connected to the Ingalls Family.    The weather was not great, but we did get to see all of the grounds.

Same forecast for tonight with thunder showers, so we'll see what tonight brings.

'This was a great experience and I'm glad we did it.  Hard to believe that people would give up all that they know and come to a new place with many new challenges so that they could have a farm and some land.  Many didn't make the homesteading requirements and for them the trip was in vane - the Ingalls did all that was required:  1.  had to be over 21  2.  had to work the land for 5 years and 3.  had to farm a certain percentage of the land (they had 160 acres) and if they fulfilled all those requirements they were able to put the deed in their name and registration was $16.00!

Any one want to try?

Off to a campsite for two nights near the Badlands where we will spend 5 days and then 9 days in Custer State Park.

My next Beatles song for my blog could be "Rocky Raccoon", but a friend suggested "Here, There and Everywhere"...vote now...dial 41599 for Rocky; and 41592 for Here, There...

When this is all over you two can probably teach a course on the heartland or Lewis and Clark! I'm enjoying your journey.
