Feb. 19 to 29, 2008

Me and my family drove around Malaysia. We rented a van in Johor Bahru and then drove north to Melaka and stayed over night. I learned that Melaka was an important trading port for many centuries. Then we drove to Kuala Lumpur in Selangor state. Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia. We had lunch at the Hard Rock Café and stayed over night at the Concorde Hotel. From the pool I could see the Petronas Twin Towers and the KL Tower. We went to a night market in China Town and everyone asked "do you want this?"

The next day we drove to the Genting Highlands to see my Dad's colleague Mr. Umar. He is a principal of an international boarding school in Pahang state. Students come from Malaysia, Indonesia, China and Korea. Then we drove to the Cameron Highlands where they grow tea. We went to the Boh tea plantation. Everyone had tea but I had hot chocolate. We drove to Kota Bahru the next day. I went to a palace museum and a craft market. I bought a wooden box for nine ringets.

Then my dad started to ride his bike. The rest of us drove to Merang in Terengganu state. When we got there, we stayed a Suria Best Western and swam in the South China sea. My dad felt something pinch his ankle so we went into the pool where there was a water slide. The next day we drove to Rantau Abang beach. This is one of the only two beaches in the world where the leather back turtles come to lay their eggs. The leather back turtle is the largest turtle in the world. They can be 2 metres long and weigh 500 kilograms. A turtle can lay 60 to 120 eggs from May to August. I wish I could have seen leather back turtles.

We drove to Pantai Cherating (Cherating Beach) and stayed at a nice resort. We went swimming in the ocean and pool. The next day we drove to Lanjut beach and stayed at a beach chalet. This was my dad's last day of cycling. My dad cycled over 700 km and he said, "it was a culturally interesting experience." We drove to Kota Tingii Waterfalls Resort and I went swimming - the waterfall gave me a massage.

Other things I saw in Malaysia...

feral cats, goats, chickens, dogs, cows, monkeys (wild and pets), a hornbill, butterflies, a snake chasing a frog, palm trees and fruit, beaches, tropical forests, mosques, large/new schools, Orang Asli reserves (people of the forest)

Other things I learned about Malaysia...

natural resources are palm oil and petroleum, its main religion is Muslim, the South China Sea is very warm

My trip to Malaysia was interesting and fun.
