It is a shame that Rio is still somewhat unsafe. My wife and I were there for two weeks 22 years ago. It was the same. Upon arrival in Rio we were warned by our hotel not to go onto the beach after sunset and not to carry a wallet or any jewelry at anytime in Rio. We stayed in both the Copacabana and Ipanema beach areas.
We did go out at night (not by the beach) and followed the no wallet, purse or jewelry warnings and had no problems.
One incident worth mentioning occurred the 3rd night we were in the Copacabana area. We got in the hotel elevator with another couple. We asked them how they were enjoying Rio. The wife of the couple we were talking to said they had just arrived the day before and were going to their room to finish packing for their return to New England where they were from. The wife explained (Her husband who was with by now had a very red face) that they arrived last evening and had gone to the beach after checking in at their hotel. No one told them about no wallet, jewelry, etc. and not to go to the beach in the evening. They started walking along the beach and were immediately approached by a group of youths who demanded money. The husband had his wallet in his rear pocket. Before he could remove his wallet the youths grabbed him and ripped his trousers and shirt off and also removed his underwear leaving him naked. The wife explained that all their money was in her husband’s wallet. The husband was forced to leave without his clothes and returned to the hotel.
I was also warned several times about carrying my camera suspended from carrying straps.
We took great care to watch our surroundings and look people in the eyes. We went a lot of places with no problems, but again we always took care to be aware of our surroundings and stayed alert.
It doesn’t seem that things have got much better, which is a shame as it is such a beatiful city.

Man, I am dissappointed. Saskatoon needs to pick up the slack and get into that number one position. GO SASKATOON!!!
March 26, 2009 at 10:11 am |
[...] most surprising list of all was this one. Maclean’s apparently ranked London as #10 and Saskatoon, Canada as #9. Really???? Detroit [...]

Saskatoon! One of the 10 most dangerous cities? Who’s idea of a joke is that?! Hardly. And how about Mexico city, robbery capital of that beautiful country? Why didn’t it make the list I must ask.
In terms of Saskatchewan, I would have to rate Regina higher than Saskatoon, but the fact is, NO Canadian city is actually very dangerous, in terms of extreme crime. Someone has their wires seriously crossed. I have always found Saskatoon to be friendly, kind of like a really large village. This is an injustice to a fine city – and no, I do not live there but have spent a fair amount of time there, usually visiting twice a year.

SASK, MOST DANGEROUS CITY?-IS THIS SITE A JOKE??…
July 10, 2009 at 12:57 pm
WOW! I HAD NO IDEA SASKATOON, WAS SO VIOLENT-SASKATOON WAS SAFE AND FRIENDLY WHEN WE VISITED IN 04, THE CITY HAS AN AMAZING HISTORY THAT WOULD SURPRIZE MOST TRAVELLER’S. I DON’T THINK IT FITS IN THE TOP TEN MOST DANGEROUS CITIES in the world! BEEN TO DETROIT OR KINGSTON, JAMAICA LATELY??
October 12, 2009 at 8:57 am |
Absolutly right !!! In México’s city Airport, if you change a few US dlls, you get assasinated around the corner. I live in Cuernavaca: it has been discriminated from this list also. Every day, we have at least 5 assasinations plus 5 kidnapings for ransom, maybe 1 will survive after payment.
In México we are making a real effort to be on top of that list, we are seeking a new Nobel Prize: for the LEAST RESPECT to HUMAN LIFE !!!
Our FeCal government believes, that any human disapearance will help ecology !!!
October 20, 2009 at 7:02 am
I can see in the way you speak about your city. You are not a part of the solution, everyone speaks for their own place.
I have visited Cuernavaca and seems a nice place
October 22, 2009 at 10:32 am
To Spark city slicker;
Right now in Cuenavaca (Cuernabullets for us), police authorityes have their boss fired, and otherheads of Morelos Government are under the ax. Of course we are doing an effort & and are part of the solution: nobody wants this Mèxico going down the drain, thanks to a corrupted Neo-Liberalism.
It “seems a nice place” because you are a tourist, seing the surface of this ocean, not the Tsunami. The wild West “seems like a nice place” too, with so many movies made.
It has been many years since I had to go armed out of home, with a defence dog for company. (I like dogs, no problem with that) 45 years ago I had to go armed, because I lived in the Jungle! Mainly for food…
I am glad you liked our country, but obviously you passed quickly! With the FeCal Government sending 70,000 people out of work for the last month (from Sep 15 to Oct 15, he closed two Secretarias: Turismo & Agricultura; plus one electricity company dissapeared by presidencial mandate) robery, poverty & misery are augmenting like crayze. When I was born in WWII, the 4 horseman of the Appocalipse where also galoping…I am not complaining, just stating the unfairness of this Top 10 list. (that list says NOTHING about solutions…only a list!)
November 11, 2009 at 8:25 pm
jajjaaaa!
April 2, 2009 at 10:38 am |
On what facts did this person base his or her conclusions on???? This list is, for the most part, ridiculous. Perhaps you could fill us in on why these particular cities are deemed the most dangerous in the world?? I agree with the last responder regarding Saskatoon. Anyone who has ever lived in Saskatchewan knows that Regina is less safe than Saskatoon. And what about cities such as Mexico, or any city in countries that are at war or even some USA cities???? I do not feel this list has credibility.
April 2, 2009 at 12:46 pm |
How about Guatemala City?
April 3, 2009 at 9:35 am |
Saskatoon?? Get real, What brainwave dreamt this list up and have they actually ever travelled?. This website has suddenly lost any credibility it had as a dependable website to visit so as to get general feel for an area, country or city one is about to visit. To me this website is just a bunch of bull**** now for even publishing this dumbass list
April 3, 2009 at 12:35 pm |
Michael. As you can see from the text at the top of the post, this list was taken from http://www.realclearworld.com. If you would like to see their reasoning for the selection here is the link: http://www.realclearworld.com/lists/most_dangerous_cities/most_dangerous_cities_intro.html
October 12, 2009 at 12:43 pm
Ahá!…so hacking other web-lists, is auto-punishable & self-consecuencial…there should be our own list in here!
Besos from a dangerous & bankrupt México!
April 4, 2009 at 11:50 pm |
What criterea did you use to detrmine the rankings? Murders, robbery, healthcare? I am sure Johannesburg must rate higher. The UN ratesa South africa 2nd in teh world for muders and interpol rates SA first in teh world for rape.Johannesburg is the crime capitoal of South Africa and the world. The SA media estimates 40000 murders a year in South africa with a population of 46 million.
April 6, 2009 at 12:15 pm |
You will have to visit the website, http://www.realclearworld.com to see the criteria for their rankings.
April 7, 2009 at 8:08 pm |
yeah, I’m dissapointed too: so hard our authority’s are in México city at kidnaping, assasinating, torturing people (french citicens get a special treat: assasinated & robed…) and we did not make the list! Like in the Olimpics, like with mex fútbol…must be a complot, so we pass as non existent…
April 13, 2009 at 3:29 pm |
You forgot a couple places that should be on the list:
Baghdad, Iraq???
N’Djamena, Chad???
Grozny, Chechnya, Russia???
Glad you put Mogadishu as #1 though…
April 16, 2009 at 4:42 pm |
Look idiots Caracas is the most dangeours city in the whole fuckin’ world only in december of last year 512 people were killed in the main city without countin’ the really bad areas and what the police hide, so get ur facts straight before saying any bullshit
August 30, 2009 at 8:05 pm |
Yu have not lived in Juarez Mexico dude… 1600 people killed in 7 months… 3 of them in fron of me… One time i went to have adrink and a fucking guy enter into the place shooting with a ak-47 in from of me in search of a drug dealer… hopefully everyone was safe… you do not want to live in Juarez Mexico… they even take the worse car to ask you for money…
you have not feel what it is to be under Sicarios’s eyes…
they do not mess…
November 11, 2009 at 8:34 pm
i agree with u carlos that guy knows nothing about dangerous….juarez is top 1..one time my dad got his car stolen(it was a really crappy car)..he left for 10 minutes and came back and it was gone….also many people die….many..MANY:(
April 17, 2009 at 9:47 am |
Caracas made the list at #4. I’d say that’s pretty dangerous compared to Linfen, Ciudad Juarez and Mogadishu.
August 25, 2009 at 9:53 pm |
hehe, no I actually think ciudad juarez is the world’s most dangerous city, a couple of months ago , the average killings in ciudad juarez was 12 each day because of the drug cartels fighting for turf, over 5000 people were killed last year ONLY in ciudad juarez
which is pretty bad obviously.
November 11, 2009 at 8:42 pm
YEA i agree….i live right next to it
April 19, 2009 at 6:28 pm |
This list is surely a joke? Lagos, Nigeria get’s no mention, yet it is the city that tops the list of places that both business and government leaders say is the last place on earth they would want to be posted. I’ve been there and certainly can confirm its reputation as extremely dangerous on all fronts.
As far as N’Djamena, Chad is concerned, I have also visited it and can say that the people are just wonderful but if you are a local then it can be a difficult place to be. Apart from which, there is an internecine war going on but it is political and internal and does not involve visitors much.
I have travelled much in Africa and the rest of the world, and apart from Lagos, Mogadishu and Johannesburg, Africa is the place where I am least likely to feel threatened or at risk. In fact, the mast peaceful place I’ve been in my life is The Gambia in West Africa which officially has the lowest crime rate in Africa as a whole.
Sao Paulo is also consistently in the world’s top 10 dangerous cities, so I am amazed that it too get’s no mantion.
Finally, London at number 10 really is a joke! I live there for part of the year and have never once seen any incident of trouble and have certainly never been a victim of robbery or any such disturbance.
It is absolutely shameful that such an uncorroberated list exists, and the site should be banned until it substantiates it’s mostly ridiculous claims. The list is not simply Bull S**t as one writer says here. The list itself is dangerous, bringing as it does, many cities into disrepute.
Sincerely…
Gary Stuart – London, NY & Africa

NAIROBI COMES 2ND AFTER MOGADISHU!!
May 1, 2009 at 5:16 pm |
You missed one.
Anywhere in the West Indies.
The Caribbean gets worse and worse every day.
I live in Antigua and with the introduction of guns and decline in tourism, we have had our tranquility ruined .Once the most peaceful and safest island in the West Indies, we are no longer safe. Our police are ill equipped to deal with this new surge of violence and tourists are unsuspecting pawns . The one thing the Antiguan government does well is sweep these things under the rug.
Murders in the last year were all committed by under 18 year old kids with police issue glocks …..hmmmm.
Tourists flashing too much bling, kids with too much time on their hands, babysat by television portraying violence as glamerous has destroyed the safety for everyone ,for all time on my island.
And why hasn’t anyone mentioned St Thomas? When I lived there, we had a murder every night! Kids 14 years old having baby gang wars in Carlotte Amalia, again, with glocks.
Of course for years the island with the most frightning crime record has been Jamaica. I won’t even go there!
May 2, 2009 at 6:30 am |
I would like to know on what they base the most dangerous. I live in Johannesburg, South Africa and go into the city regularly, as long as you know where you are going and don’t look like a tourist, i find no problem. I am a white person, and i find the people friendly and very helpfull.
May 3, 2009 at 7:02 pm |
With all due respect to all 10 of these cities scariness, the most dangerous city in the world right now (outside an official war zone) is Tijuana. Kidnappings, murders, beheadings, daily crossfire in the streets and it’s spreading well across the U.S. border.
And frankly, steer clear of favelas and that city doesn’t belong on the list.
May 4, 2009 at 8:42 am |
Rio is nowhere near as bad as what they make out from personal experience and liaising with the police in Leblon/Copacabana, I rate some cities in Australia as more dangerous than Rio for a tourist. If you cooperate you don’t lose your life or limb, in Australia they don’t have or need a reason to bash you or kill you (usually through bashings and drug fuelled violence) the last tourist to get shot and killed in Rio was 2 years ago. Like anywhere in the world don’t advertise yourself as a tourist!

@ Shoot: Your list includes FOUR South African cities? No wonder people are leaving in droves…
May 18, 2009 at 10:39 am |
South Africa has 18,000 murders a year, where did 40,000 come from?
It’s also interesting how people are pretending the favelas aren’t really part of Rio, yeah, like every ghetto in every city in the world isn’t really part of those cities either rofl.
Then someone else claiming Australian cities have higher murder rates than the marvellous city?!?! That’s amazing as Australian cities are among the safest, lowest murder rate places in the world, Rio certainly isn’t.
May 29, 2009 at 7:24 pm |
I’m sure many of you have theories on how and what to look for when deciding which city or country is the most dangerous.i do believe that this list is in accurate for many reasons, however i don’t dispute one fact that Mogadishu is the most dangerous city in world for the past 20yrs.its a capital city of a country with no government, police, laws of any kind and an abundance of weapons.Mogadishu is so dangerous there were no more enemies so they created there own by venturing out to sea and hijacking cargo ships for ransom.tell me about any other city that’s as bad,and by the way Baghdad is nothing in comparison.
June 4, 2009 at 6:44 pm |
C’mon I bet most of the people having a say in this only ever visited 1 or at most 2 of these countries, and yes being a South African I would admit that it is really dangerous in the big cities but like everywhere else in the world if ur in the wrong place at the wrong time then ur gonna get it no matter what, you mention dangerous places but not once is there any mention of other african coutries like the Congo where there is ongoing wars and tribal slaughter and where children are trained too kill, anyway I am proud too be South African and we have really beautiful places thats safe too visit but again if ur number is up its up lol, so tc
June 7, 2009 at 3:27 pm |
ye Caracas def should be higher up… as for Rio the danger there is well over hyped
June 18, 2009 at 11:23 pm |
Get your facts straight for 2006. Time Magazine Considered Ramadi, Iraq (not Baghdad) the most dangerous place in the world.
July 3, 2009 at 1:09 am |
I’m rather astonished too. Can’t see how and why London or Saskatoon or Detroit should me more dangerous than places like Caracas, Baghdad, Guatemala city, Johannesburg, Jerusalem and I could go on. I’m always a little skeptical about these rankings because they are easily likely to be confusing for travellers. Should I really feel safer in Caracas than in London or Detroit, I would no doubt face a lot of problems….
July 3, 2009 at 1:45 am |
Being in the wrong place at the wrong time does count in a South African city, like anywhere in the world, but…most murders in SA are not in the red light/drug trading/gang districts, but on people locked up at night in their own homes; babies; children; at red lights or stop streets in broad daylight; murderers waiting for your return from work at your front gate.
Iraq is artificially dangerous – it is a war zone! It shouldn’t even be on the list.
July 15, 2009 at 9:44 am |
erm… I am 28 yrs old and have lived 14 years in Caracas and 14 years in London… and I cant understand how they are 6 places apart.
There is NO WAY these cities could be only 6 places apart, I remember when I lived in Venezuela you could be having dinner with your family and you might hear several shootings EVERY NIGHT and the normal drill is to get away from the windows in case a stray bullet hits you.
And I lived in the upper class area, but the lower class was so close to us (other side of the motorway) that you just had to dock if you were near a window.
August 1, 2009 at 7:15 am |
How about Baghdad, Iraq? or Karachi, Pakistan? or any city in Colombia or El Salvador? How can Saskatoon be on this list??? Who’s opinion is this?
August 14, 2009 at 2:58 pm |
Whoever wrote this list is not very smart and has obviously never been to Canada. There are no cities in Canada that can even compare to a place like Somalia. Get real and do some traveling my friend. I thought this list was a joke at first it is so backwards.
August 14, 2009 at 3:27 pm |
Apes: The list is compiled by Realclearworld.com using actual police statistics.
August 18, 2009 at 8:20 pm |
I was raped, robbed and tortured in Saskatoon (twice).
Canadians you are a bunch of animals…hehehe

OJO,..

london at number 10!! hahahahaha. which clown came up with this list – it is a complete joke! so according to this list london is more dangerous than kingston jamaica, nairobi kenya, lagos nigeria, bogota, darfur, addis ababa, la paz bolivia, cuzco and lima peru, the cities of panama, nicaragua, honduras, guatamala.. what a joke!! hahahahahahaha the publisher has no credibility left..

I am not defending ‘my’ city but if London is in the top ten then i would feel relatively safe anywhere. I have lived here most of my life and although not perfect i would happily walk through 90% of it at night on my own. Now i haven’t visited all the other cities listed but from what many say you could not do this in most of them.
Another thing about London is that it is full of people from different countries and cultures so you are less likely to be singled out when visiting. You can’t walk 5 mins without hearing another language so, if you are a foreign visiter people take no notice and there is less assumption that you are a ‘naive tourist’ because London is so cosmopolitan and diverse you could easily live there, perhaps all your life.
This list could be dangerous for that reason as i could read it and think places are less dangerous than London as i find London relatively safe. A thing to remember is that who it is more dangerous for. I suspect a ‘gringo’ in Caracas is more likely to stand out and be seen as a target whereas a foreigner in London is far more difficult to pick out.
December 2, 2009 at 7:55 am |
I lived in London for 9 years and am really surprised to see it on the list at all. I used to walk through it at night too and not worry. I am amazed. I considered London to be reasonably safe.
For nearly 8 years I have lived near Valencia in Spain, which I consider to be REALLY safe.
December 1, 2009 at 7:55 pm |
i think criminal is everywhere in the whole country in the world, each country have “red zone” and its dangerous to be visited. The only thing you can do is avoid to visit that zone (you can ask to the police or hotel officer where the red zone is), be nice to people surounding and believe that the god is always be with you.
good day guys..

Good advice!
That’s why we didn’t visit Jo’berg on a three week trip to South Africa. We were advised NOT to under any circumstances. The rest of South Africa we found to be safe, including Cape Town.

Born, raised and lived in the heart of London most of my life – if a UK city has to be included on that ludicrous list, I’d nominate Nottingham as being more dangerous! Stupid list.
December 4, 2009 at 7:35 am |
Juarez was declared a few weeks ago by the their local newspaper that it was the world’s most dangerous cities for a second year! On nov 30 17 were killed including a seven year old. there more than 2000 people murdered there alone this year and about 1600 last year. it is just sad that on their local tv news when you see them theres usually ten people murdered a day. Just go to eldiario.com.mx and porve how violent this city really is.
