Where have you stayed?!

January 31, 2008

Another day another new feature on TravelPod! Okay we’re not that quick but we are rolling out a new feature today. The number one request amongst travel-podders at our last meet-up was to be able to tag their entries and photos with places they’ve stayed. So starting today we’ve added a new control that allows you to conveniently tag your entries and photos with places you’ve stayed. We have a pretty large database of existing hotels, hostels, and B&B’s to make it even easier for you to tag your entry. Below is a screenshot of what you will now see when you create or edit an entry.

Hotel tagging on entry page

To use this tagging feature, simply click in the textbox and start typing the name of the place you stayed. An auto-suggest feature similar to the one for cities will appear under the textbox with a list of places that match what you’ve typed so far. Select one of the options or feel free to enter your own name. You can also add more than one place, to do this simply click the “Add another” icon or text. This will take your current selection and move it down into a new textbox leaving the top one free to enter another place.

There is also a search feature, which allows you another way to find hotels, hostels or B&B’s. After entering your query and hitting “Search”, a list of hotels matching your query will be shown. Simply click the name of the hotel and the search window will disappear and the textbox on the entry page will be automatically filled out for you.

Eve Rehn: Traveler IQ Fanatic

January 29, 2008

Eve Rehn, Traveler IQ addict

People worldwide are playing Traveler IQ, TravelPod’s addictive geography game more than 4 million times per month.

Eve Rehn, 48, is the most prolific player of the game. She has been playing it daily for about two months. So far, she has logged more than 9,000 games. “I’m a very extreme person,” Rehn says, “it’s all or nothing.”

Traveler IQ involves some pretty simple concepts. The player is asked to locate specific sites and cities around the world while a giant red timer at the top of the screen puts the heat on by counting down pretty rapidly. It’s the gamer’s job to locate the answer to each question in as short a time as possible. The quicker and closer the user clicks, the higher the score. As gamers continue through the levels, the locations become progressively harder to find.

Rehn is a former linguistics professor, but she now calls herself a “lady of leisure”, living in Centerport, Long Island. Her daily routine involves getting up and playing the game, then going out for lunch, perhaps taking a nap, reading, watching TV or partaking in another of her passions, betting on horse races and gambling at the casino with her partner.

“I’m highly competitive, so I play whatever it takes to increase my score.”

She’s also very organized, writing previous answers down in alphabetical order and looking up the answers before the timer runs out. So, exactly how long does she spend playing Traveler IQ each day?

“Oh dear it sounds embarrassing,” she says, “It could well be two to three hours”. When she’s not out and about or traveling, she plays the game on average, five days per week.

“I should clean the house more but I don’t, I’m too busy doing quizzes,” she says in her cheerful British accent.

Rehn enjoys Traveler IQ for many reasons, but the most important is that it has increased her knowledge of the world.

“It’s not mindless,” she says, “apart from being challenging, I learn things.”

Rehn will soon be able to speak nine languages. She is currently taking a course in Arabic, and surprised the entire class by correctly identifying every Arabic country when the professor challenged his students. She credits this feat to her experience playing Traveler IQ.

Her love of languages has brought her to many places all over the world, and she says that this has made her a better Traveler IQ player. Rehn has traveled since she was very young, and has lived in such far flung countries as France, Germany, Norway and Japan. However, she’s currently playing island quizzes, which are usually the most difficult. However, she has also been to many of these islands, so she says that the personal experience helps to improve her score.

Mostly, Rehn likes playing the user-created games because they tend to be shorter. The gamer can progress quickly through the shorter levels and increase their score faster than in the official versions of the game. This makes it easier to get on the high scores list.

She’s also made quite a few friends, who are sometimes quite jealous of her success, including a 19 year old from the Philippines, who she is currently competing with. “It’s all harmless, really,” she says with a laugh.

Click here to join Eve, and play Traveler IQ too.

January 18, 2008

This week’s hot discussion topics in our forums:

The Bucket List

What is on your “before I kick the bucket” list? For some, visiting The Pyramids, The Great Wall of China or Mount Kilimanjaro top the list. For others, it’s as simple as “riding one of those huge, crazy looking trikes” What’s yours?

An Amazing Sleeping Bag

Bebo & TravelPod - Share your Travel Blogs on one more social network

January 17, 2008

We’ve launched a new way for TravelPod members to share their blogs, photos, and travel maps with their Bebo friends.

If you’re a member of both TravelPod and Bebo you can add “My Travel Blogs” to your Bebo profile. A TravelPod “patch” will then show up on your page under the “My Travel Blogs” section, which will include your travelmap map displaying the places you’ve traveled and links to your TravelPod blogs and photos. Your friends will be able to see these details too.

My Travel Blogs on Bebo

It’s easy to get started:

  1. Go to My Travel Blogs on Bebo
  2. Click the “Add this App” button
  3. Enter your TravelPod User Id and Password

There is another, more experimental, feature for Bebo. When you send an entry to friends, there is now an option to pick “Bebo” as one of the recipients and we will try to notify your friends on the Bebo Ch-Ch-Changes box. These features are new on Bebo, so we all may have some growing pains.

Happy Traveling,

Clayton

TravelPod is recruiting Local Experts, Get a free enhanced membership by becoming a Local Expert

January 16, 2008

TravelPod is currently recruiting Local Experts who can help other travelers when they have questions about a specific province, country or city. Could this be you?

Ideally a Local Expert knows everything about local tourist hotspots, as well as all the hidden and lesser known secrets.

Do you have your ear to the ground? Do you know where the best shopping, nightlife and restaurants are? Do you know how to get around town quickly and cheaply? If so, we’re looking for you!

Becoming a Local Expert entitles you to an enhanced membership on your travel blog, which will eliminate ads for your visitors. It also means you get a badge on your blog that tells everyone that you are a trusted source.

In return, we expect our experts to write one overview (aka a FAQ or “starter kit”) about their location and answer at least one question or start one new topic every week in our discussion forums.

Email Louise at louiseb@travelpod.com to apply.

Making TravelPod easier to use… More enhancements

January 12, 2008

After listening carefully to your feedback, we’ve made some more changes that should help get rid of some of the clutter that’s crept up over the years of adding features to TravelPod.

We’ve launched a good sized batch of updates to make TravelPod easier to use, one of the most noticable changes for members will be that some of our menus have been “de-cluttered”.

Here’s what you’ll see now on the “Your Travel Blogs” page:

Your Travel Blogs

On this page we’ve moved all but the most important options for each travel blog.

Menu Changes on ‘Your Travel Blogs’

Travel Blog Entries Page

Here we’ve added a new menu for actions you can perform on this travel blog like:

  • Invite Guests       - send an email to your friends letting them know about your blog
  • View Guestbook   - view your guestbook entries
  • Feature Request  - nominate your blog to be featured on www.travelpod.com
  • Your Donations    - send a request for donations
  • Print Travel Blog - generate a printable copy of your blog

New menu in Travel Blog Entries

Although we plan to continually make TravelPod easier to use for our members, big disruptive changes can be annoying. So, these will most likely be the last big usability changes we make to our menus for a while.

Cheers!
